An EPUB Speed Reader That's Still a Real Reader

Search for an EPUB speed reader and you'll find two kinds of app. The first is a normal EPUB reader with no focus mode at all. The second is a "speed mode" bolted onto — or worse, instead of — a real reader: paste in text or crack open a file, blast it one word at a time, and hope you never need to look back. The first kind can't hold your attention; the second kind can't be trusted with a whole book.

Why "the same app in both modes" matters

Word-by-word reading — RSVP — has a well-documented weakness: it removes your ability to glance back. About 10–15% of natural eye movements are regressions, small backwards jumps that repair comprehension when a sentence lands wrong. In a pure stream, the word is gone. That's tolerable for a tweet and fatal for chapter twelve of a novel, where the name you half-registered turns out to matter.
